Keen was founded in 2003 by Martin Keen and Rory Fuerst in Portland, Oregon. Keen had the idea for the Newport sandal back in 1999 while sailing: tired of stubbing his toes on deck, he built a sandal with a rubber cap over the front. It landed immediately – Footwear News named the company Launch of the Year in 2003. That toe cap is still the giveaway.
