Antihero Skateboards was founded in 1995 by Julien Stranger in San Francisco, under the Deluxe umbrella. The push came from Jim Thiebaud, at a point when Stranger and Thrasher editor Jake Phelps both found skateboarding stale and the industry increasingly corporate. By Stranger's own account there was no concept – more a counterweight to everything else. What stuck: crude graphics, the Eagle, and a rider list running from John Cardiel through Tony Trujillo to Grant Taylor.
