Real Skateboards was founded in 1991 in San Francisco by Jim Thiebaud and Tommy Guerrero, backed by Fausto Vitello and Eric Swenson – part of Deluxe. Both came from Powell Peralta and were done with demos and corporate logic. They started out with Xerox graphics and a few hundred boards per design. Real took political positions early, back when that was unusual in skateboarding.
